Project:

Rockwood Grill + Blue Star Lounge, Palm Desert, CA

About the project:

R.D. Olson Construction completely transformed the main dining and public areas of this resort favorite. Formerly the Lakeview Restaurant, the 14,000 square foot Rockwood Grill offers a contemporary setting with textures of wood, iron and rock against a natural palette of sustainable finishes.

Adjacent to the new restaurant is the Blue Star Lounge, a dramatic atrium bar with an expansive illuminated back bar accentuating the double height atrium. A magnificent 80-seat indoor/outdoor garden terrace with fire pits and lounge seating offers guests the opportunity to enjoy desert views and passing gondolas on the resort’s waterways.

The property’s waterfront location required the installation of an Aqua Dam to retain lake water and enable construction of the garden terrace. Positioning the dam without damaging the existing lake posed a distinct challenge. R.D. Olson lowered the dam into the lake by crane, unrolled it and set it into position, then filled the dam with water from the lake. When completely filled, the dam was approximately 200 feet long, 30 feet wide and 16 feet high.

These two exciting venues were part of an extensive $25M property renovation that commemorated the resort’s 25th Silver Anniversary.
