R.D. Olson Construction Completes Restaurant on Santa Catalina
September 24, 2010
IRVINE, Calif.- R. D. Olson Construction, specialists in building restaurants, hotels and resorts, has transformed a 1920s-built structure into a contemporary restaurant along the Santa Catalina Front Street boardwalk. According to legend, the original structure was built as a retail store in the 1920s for Wrigley’s wife. Today it is owned by Santa Catalina Company.
Avalon Grille is a single story 3500-square-foot seaside restaurant that seats 115 guests. The restaurant has an old-time maritime style, with white walls enhanced with vertical strips of wood creating a stripped 12” pattern. The ceiling is high and flat, featuring recessed lighting and exposed redwood. Travertine flooring now travels from the restaurant to the 80-square-foot patio. The renovation also called for a large horseshoe bar from Afromosia wood. Doors on the east and south side of the restaurant and bi-folding doors lead to the Catalina boardwalk, making for an exquisite indoor-outdoor dining experience. An exposed high wood ceiling pronounced by 12-inch strips of wood creates a sophisticated, yet charming pattern, while recessed lighting casts a warm glow throughout. The renovation cost totaled $2.2 million.
Avalon Grille was designed by Backen Gillam Architects of Sausalito, Calif., which also designed the Sundance Institute Community of the Arts in Sundance, Utah and Solbar at Solage in Calistoga, Calif.–a highly rated resort.
