R.D. Olson Construction Completes Second Phase of Palm Desert Golf Resort

PALM DESERT, CALIF.–R.D. Olson Construction, an Irvine-based builder of country clubs, retail outlets, hotels and business complexes, has completed the second phase of Marriott Shadow Ridge, a golf and vacation club in Palm Desert. This phase included a clubhouse and central facilities building, which sit upon an 18-hole golf course designed by Nick Faldo. Project costs totaled $14 million.

The 46,000–square-foot clubhouse envelopes a restaurant, spa, pro shop, swing studio, locker rooms, golf administration offices and club fitting area. The 10,000-square-foot central facilities building is home to a reception and sales area and marketplace. Each of the buildings is of Mediterranean design with ornate handrails, decorative fresco flooring, elaborate build-in antiqued iron fixtures and colorful wall murals. At completion, Marriott Shadow Ridge will serve as a full-service vacation club encompassing 65,382 square feet of newly constructed facilities.

Four architectural firms worked on the project. MBH Architects designed the main structure. Creative Resource Associates designed the restaurant, spa and all public areas such as hallway and bathrooms. Tom Hoch Design designed all golf-related areas including the pro shop, swing studio, administration office and locker rooms and Houston/Tyner designed much of the interior.

“It was a pleasure working with Marriott and such a talented team of architects,” said Dennis Reyling, president, R.D. Olson Construction. “The result is an exceptionally exquisite vacation resort that we are proud to have built.”

R.D. Olson Construction built the first phase of Marriott Shadow Ridge, which included a sales office and maintenance facility. It was completed in September 2000.

The construction company has worked with Marriott Vacation Club International on many other projects including the first and second phases of Marriott’s Newport Coast Villas–a 77-acre resort located in Newport Beach.

R.D. Olson Construction was founded in 1979 by Robert Olson. The company has since built such well-known establishments as the Marriott Residence Inn, Irvine; SpringHill Suites, Hawthorne; and Dave & Buster’s, Hawaii. Current projects include Morton’s Steakhouse, Santa Ana, Calif. and Honolulu, Hawaii; and Homewood Suites and Hilton Garden Inn, a two-hotel resort in San Diego and renovation of the Monarch Beach Resort Clubhouse and Bay Club, Dana Point, Calif.
