Students Receive Scholarships to Further Studies in Construction Management and Architectural Engineering

CERRITOS, Calif.—Southern California residents Nicole Algarin, Christine Plaza and Guillermo Villegas, have been awarded a National Association of Women in Construction/R.D. Olson Construction Scholarship. This is the third year the Long Beach Area Chapter of the NAWIC and R.D. Olson Construction have partnered to present scholarships to a select number of students in pursuit of college degrees in architecture, construction management or any related trades such as engineering.

“I really appreciate that NAWIC and R.D. Olson Construction helped me out,” Algarin said. “When you’re a student, anything helps, even encouragement.”

Villegas, while still in high school, will be studying architectural engineering at UCLA, with plans to transfer to Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo.

Algarin will begin her studies toward a career in construction management in the fall at East Los Angeles College. She expects to graduate with an associate of arts degree in 2004 and complete her education at Cal Poly.

Plaza is studying architectural engineering at Cal Poly.

NAWIC is a 6,500-woman organization with more than 200 chapters in the United States and Canada. Its core purpose is to enhance the success of women in the construction industry.

R.D. Olson Construction is an Irvine-based general contractor and construction management company specializing in hotels, retail outlets and business complexes.
