R.D. Olson Construction To Build Upscale Student Housing Complex

RIVERSIDE, Calif.— Irvine-based R.D. Olson Construction has broken ground on a $24 million University of California, Riverside student housing complex that features upscale amenities and a high-technology design.

The construction company, which specializes in multi-family housing, student housing, hotels, restaurants and country clubs, has begun design/build work on the 149-apartment 217,820-square-foot University Village Student Housing that will include a spa, pool, recreation room and outdoor barbeque area.

The complex has three structures: The Towers is an eight-story, 134-suite post-tension concrete building featuring tiered architecture. The ground and third floors and podium deck have open-air trellises characterized by large space frames and exposed trusses, girders and lighting. The Garden, a four-story all-metal structure features 10 single-story apartments and five two-story units. The third structure is single-story metal frame and home to a meeting room and recreation area.

The contemporary complex will house 524 bedrooms, each designed to sleep four students. Apartments will feature kitchen and living areas.

“This is a great example of what the effects of land shortages are having on new student housing development around major universities here in California. Building an eight story concrete structure for student housing in Riverside would have been unheard of just 10 years ago – now it’s right in the sweet spot of what we do.’’ said Robert Olson, founding owner of R. D. Olson Construction.

R.D. Olson Construction is working with two Pasadena-based design firms: Onyx Architect and Saiful/Boukuet Structural Engineers. The student housing design presents a stylish look, with a two-tone stucco exterior surrounded by palm trees. This futuristic metal/concrete complex is scheduled to be completed in fall 2004.

University Village Student Housing is located at 3500 Iowa in Riverside, near the 60 freeway and across the street from the college. It is owned by University Village Housing, LLC.

R.D. Olson Construction was founded in 1979 by Robert D. Olson. The company has since built such well-known establishments as the Renaissance Esmeralda Resort, Indian Wells and Sports Club LA, Beverly Hills—both in California. Current projects in California include Ojai Valley Inn & Spa Resort, Ojai; Laguna Cliffs Marriott Resort, Dana Point; Casa de Amma Assisted Living, San Juan Capistrano; and Marriott’s Shadow Ridge, Palm Desert.
