Construction and designer, Stonehill & Taylor Architects, will
envelop elements of the structure’s historic past and Spanish-Italian Renaissance
flavor within the walls of a completely modern facility. Columns and
pilasters, richly textured fabric wall coverings, custom carpet and
a 12-foot-in-diameter chandelier will give the bowl a dramatic
early-period flare, while a new sound system and multifunctional
lighting designed to enhance all types of events from new product
presentations to intimate dinners will incorporate the latest in
technological components.
“This is an
opportunity for us to build a facility that brings the past alive
using the tools and techniques representative of a whole new era in
construction,” said Dennis Reyling, president, R. D. Olson
Construction.
In addition, the
Biltmore Bowl will now be compliant with the ADA and feature a
wheelchair lift at ground level, connecting to the South Galleria
below. Olson also will install a hydraulic elevator to link all
convention levels, again, instrumental in assisting people with
disabilities.
The Biltmore was
originally designed by Schultz and Weaver. When it opened in 1923,
it was the largest and grandest hotel west of Chicago. The Biltmore
Bowl was the hotel’s focal point, with its exquisite decor and
ample space. In its current state, it is a 13,000-square-foot room.
Plans call for dividing the space and building a 4,000-square-foot
foyer and 9,000-square-foot bowl designed to house 1000 guests.
Renovation of the
Biltmore Bowl is scheduled for completion in early fall. The hotel
and restaurants will remain open during construction.
