Construction Completes Renovation of Fairmont Newport Beach Hotel |

IRVINE, Calif.—R.D. Olson
Construction has completed renovation of the Fairmont Newport Beach
Hotel main floor and lobby. This is part of an extensive $22 million
hotel renovation following a 2005 acquisition of the former Sutton
Place Hotel by Sunstone Hotel Investors, Inc. The hotel is located
in the heart of Newport Beach’s business district at 4500 MacArthur
Blvd.
The Fairmont Newport Beach Hotel’s newly renovated
23,000-square-foot main floor and lobby now has a new expansive
registration area and front desk, designed to make an unforgettable
first impression on hotel guests. Nearby is a space known as the
“quiet lounge” where guests can take a breather after a hard day of
meetings or touring the city. The lobby neighbors a cocktail lounge,
waiting room and chic restaurant enveloped within a large atrium,
which too underwent extensive renovation.
The hotel now offers a separate area called the Gold Lounge, where
preferred travelers can enjoy special benefits and privileges. The
lounge is a Fairmont Hotels & Resorts’ trademark, designed
specifically to cater to frequently returning guests.
“We have dramatically changed the hotel’s presence to be in sync
with the Fairmont Hotels & Resorts’ upscale brand,” said Robert
Olson, CEO/president, R.D. Olson Construction. “The grandness of the
hotel is a perfect fit for the Newport Beach area.”
Lee & Sakahara Architects AIA, based in Irvine, is credited for
overseeing the space planning, which includes renovation of all
pubic areas. Colorado-based Design Force is the interior designer.
The design elements are exotic. African mahogany millwork graces the
front of the reception desk and new lounge bar. Cambrian black
granite tops add a dramatic flare to the overall look.
Canadian-imported stone veneer walls adorn the atrium and lobby. In
other areas, faux painted walls of warm earth tones and rich
millwork complement the strikingly unusual décor that artfully
combines the primitive with the ultramodern. The redesign of the
atrium, a main focal point, features a lush mixture of palms and
other tropical vegetation. The final touch comes with the
cream-colored, dark brown bordered marble flooring.
Robert Olson founded R.D. Olson Construction in 1979. It has since
grown into one of the largest general contracting companies in
California. The company has built establishments for such clients as
Marriott, Hilton and Benihana to name a few. Current projects under
construction in California include Union Station Village at Los
Angeles Union Station; Ocean Ranch shopping center, Laguna Niguel;
and Marriott’s Shadow Ridge, Palm Desert. Out of state Olson is
working on completing the Benihana, Coral Gables, FL.
